The Nutcracker: Behind the Scenes
Have you ever wondered what goes
on between your rehearsals and the performance? Who are all of those people
running around you in November? Well, here’s a short version of what’s been
going on.
Advertisements and announcements
are collected for the program and sent to the printers. Posters and
postcards are distributed around town. Ads are placed in newspapers and on
radio.
Our stage manager works with the
crew of the Shubert to set the lighting and sound, and make sure the
backdrops, props and sets are all in place. Many volunteers sign up to help
with everything from loading props and sets, to providing refreshments to
the orchestra, to watching over you backstage.
The musicians rehearse their
music and the choir practices their songs. The wardrobe mistress and her
assistants sew and sew and sew some more. Flights and hotels are booked for
our guest artists. Everyone helping with rehearsals learns the roles they
will teach you. Cast lists are set and reset and set again. Everyone tries
very hard to accommodate all of the needs of all of our students and
families.
Finally, programs are printed,
costumes are fitted and rehearsals are completed. It’s Production Week and
we’re ready to go! You have all prepared very hard for this week and now
it’s finally here! It’s a wonderful time. Enjoy it! |
Mr. Carney’s Monthly Review
November 2004 – I must begin this message by thanking
everyone for your hard work and professional attitude over the long hours of
our Dress Run weekend. Thanks to your parents too for their patience and
understanding. It was wonderful to see you all in your costumes. It was a
special pleasure to see the Lambs, Decorations and Angels, who I had not yet
seen in rehearsals. You have clearly worked very hard for Carla O'Brien and
should be very proud of yourselves.
Once again, I am extremely pleased with everyone’s work in
class. I’ve received good reports from all teachers again this month.
To those of you not in this year’s Nutcracker, I hope to see
you all on stage in May when we return to the Shubert for our 20th
Anniversary Performance and 4th Discover Dance.
Please join me in giving this year’s Nutcracker cast our best
wishes for their performances.
